Groom Creek – A Friends of the Maitai & Nelson City Council Partnership

The restoration of the Groom Creek wetland has been a major focus of Friends of the Maitai since 2014.  Regular planting and plant care days have seen this area transformed with the trees now reaching maturity and the river banks clad in flax and grasses.

Adjacent to the area we maintain additional restoration by the Nelson City Council includes ponds and extensive planting.

Spring 2014

September Groom creek – opposite Maitai Valley Motor camp – approx 1200 mixed species plants planted

Winter 2015

1600 mixed species at the Groom Creek site

Spring 2016

1300 mixed species at the Groom Creek site

Winter 2017

Planned – Sunday – June 18th – 155 mixed species

Ongoing fortnightly plant releasing, weeding and mulching by the Friends of the Maitai Planting group.
Denis Blomquist’s ongoing contributions – weeding the Groom Creek site – Old man’s beard, broom, blackberry, bracken
Regularly mowing pathways in planted area.
Trapping line for rats, mice, mustelids from top of Groom Creek area to top end of Waihitakaro golf course
Denis built a stile in Autumn 2017 for public access through the Groom Creek area.
